Shtisel fans rejoice! The iconic family returns in this spinoff series that offers us the backstory of Nuchem and Libbie before they moved to Israel. Set in Antwerp in the 1990s, the incomparable Sasson Gabay reprises his role as Nuchem, the jewelery dealer whose unconventional business “tactics” cost him his marriage and threaten his daughter’s marriage prospects. Hadas Yaron (Fill the Void, Felix and Meira) is luminous as Nuchem’s beloved only child who dreams of becoming a writer. Yonatan Indursky, the writer and director who co-created Shtisel brings his trademark humour and empathy to explore love, ambition and the competing forces of tradition and individuality that made Shtisel a global phenomenon.TJFF presents the first two episodes.Part of the series, Artist in Residence: Sasson Gabay sponsored by Kultura Collective, with contributing support from Canada-Israel Cultural Foundation.

Reviews

“A marvelously warm comfort and a treat for the eyes and the heart, a little like the dish it is named after.” – Kveller

“There’s plenty of relationship drama, family angst and minutiae of Haredi daily life, all played perfectly by a set of actors led by the masterful Gabbay.” – The Times of Israel
