Spanning three countries and several languages, the delicate debut feature by Emmanuel Finkiel (the director of this year’s Mariana’s Room) presents three interwoven stories about women shaped by trauma. When a bus carrying French Holocaust survivors breaks down in Poland, Rivka (Shulamit Adar) clashes with her husband, exposing lingering tensions. In Paris, Regine (Liliane Rovère from this year’s The Safe House) receives a visit from a man claiming to be her long-lost father who survived the camps. In Tel Aviv, Vera, a Russian immigrant, searches for a missing cousin. Authentically acted and written, Voyages is an elegant and wistful film exploring the emotional landscape of the last generation of Holocaust survivors as they struggle to make peace with their uprooted pasts before it’s too late.

Reviews

“A film of remarkable subtlety and restraint.” The New York Times

“Life isn’t so much beautiful in Voyages as it is enigmatic and unpredictable.” IndieWire
